Highlighting April Online Learning Opportunities
School Library Survey opens April 1
The new and improved School Library Survey opens April 1. Information for completing the survey will be e-mailed to every district superintendent by March 30. Data is being collected in one survey per district instead of in one survey for each library. Talk to your superintendent about details or contact School Library Coordinators Lee Crary and Joan Upell (email) for more information. All surveys are due by May 31.
Webinars will be offered on April 20 and April 27 for those who would like help with the online instrument and to provide a forum for any questions. To register go to SDSL Training Calendar.
We encourage each district to complete the survey in a timely manner so that the data can be compiled and reported by early fall for use in decision-making processes and school improvement planning. The first seven districts to complete the survey will be designated as Early Bird Awardees and will receive a free copy of the PBS “Liberty or Death” DVD.
Authors in the Schools 2010 planning begins
The 2010 South Dakota Festival of Books will be held in Sioux Falls on Sept. 24-26. Authors who are attending the Festival of Books are also invited to participate in the Authors in the Schools program. For the 2010 Festival of Books the following authors (to date) have confirmed their interest in participating in the school and/or public library visits. If interested in an author listed or to inquire about another festival author please contact Samantha Hendriks at firstname.lastname@example.org. SDHC will be working with local Sioux Falls School District Coordinator Ann Smith and South Dakota State Library’s School Library Coordinator Joan Upell to coordinate the visits.
Due to time and travel constraints, the authors will most likely visit schools and public libraries in and around the Sioux Falls area. They will possibly be available for visits on Sept. 22, 23, 24, or 27. The cost to the school/library per author visit will be $200-$400 depending on the author.

AASL School Libraries Count! survey needs your input
For the fourth year AASL is asking all school libraries to complete the “School Libraries Count!” survey. This is a longitudinal survey that AASL is using to develop advocacy tools to support school libraries at the local, state and national levels. To complete the survey go to www.aaslsurvey.org. You do not need to be a member of AASL to participate. The survey deadline is April 30.
