Six graduate from Library Training Institute

Graduates of the Library Training Institute

State Librarian Dan Siebersma awarded Certificates of Public Library Management to six graduates of the Library Training Institute on June 11 at the Northern State University campus in Aberdeen. Graduates included Debbie Arne, Western Dakota Technical Institute; JoAnn Gemar, Scotland Community Library; Karla Bieber, A.H. Brown Public Library, Mobridge; Laurel Lammers, Hand County Library; Julie Morren, Beresford Public Library; and Anita Nachtigal, Platte Public Library.

A total of 21 students from across the state attended Institute this year. Coordinated by the State Library, the Institute is a four-year program of continuing education for library practitioners, support staff, and trustees of small to medium-sized public libraries. Students attend in-person classes for one-week in June. Additional classes are taken online between summers.

Warner librarian, Ginny Sannes said the highlight of the week was meeting and talking to the other librarians in the group. “The classes and instructors are great, but it’s also a great chance to network with other librarians from across the state. Now I know who to call when I need help with my automation system or have other questions,” she explained.

First year students included Lindsey Hansen, Centerville Community Library; Syrena Maranell, Dorthee Pike Memorial Library, Lake Preston; Jane Abernathy, Piedmont Community Library; Michelle Kass, Scotland Community Library; and Dawn McKinstry, Bison Public Library.

Students returning for their second and third years were Tamie Nickelson, Emma Burnham Public Library, Frederick; Joan Trumm, Cozard Memorial Library, Chamberlain; Becky VanNoort, Hudson Public Library; Ginny Sannes, Warner Community and School Library; Delight Robertson, Sisseton Wahpeton College Library; LeAnn Kaufman, Freeman Public Library; Dawn Johnson, Hot Springs Public Library; Holly Johnston, Grant County Library; Cynthia Harlan, Phoebe Apperson Hearst Library, Lead; and Kelly Marriott, Edgemont Public Library.

State Library Continuing Education Coordinator Kathleen Slocum commented, “When I arrived in Aberdeen I was so excited to be part of something that has been going on since 1985. I used some of the old techniques and introduced some new ones. One that everyone loved was moving to Kramer Hall now that it is air conditioned. The everyday activities of eating together and sharing were fun. In addition to our common library work, we are parents, grandparents and community members. We just all reside in different towns. I'm already working on 2011. See you the week of June 12 -17.”
