Public Library Survey "EARLY BIRD" awardees

Congratulations and thank you Early Bird libraries! The following libraries have submitted and locked their 2009 Public Library Survey as of February 25:

• Freeman Public Library
• Potter County Library
• Vermillion Public Library
• Clear Lake City Library
• Cozard Memorial Library
• Edgemont Public Library
• Lake Andes Carnegie

In 2007 St. John's Church Foundation produced an educational DVD, "Liberty or Death," in partnership with PBS. The television program was chosen for national broadcast by American Public Television. It features two Pulitzer Prize-winning scholars and a reenactment of Patrick Henry's speech. The St. John's Church Foundation and the National Society Children of the American Revolution have partnered to provide this educational DVD to the public school districts and/or local media centers. The first seven School Library Survey Early Bird recipients will also receive these DVDs as well as those libraries which beta-tested this year our new survey instruments. We are offering these from the State Library as a special THANK YOU to those who have made special efforts to support our state and federal mandated responsibilities to annually collect South Dakota state's library statistics and data. Thank you for your efforts!

It’s not too late to attend the Public Library Survey webinar on March 5 for a little extra help.

The deadline for all survey submissions is March 31.

  Assistant State Librarian, Daria Bossman, will lead public library staff through the basics of the new survey (formerly known as the “annual report.”) in this webinar.

  Stacia McGourty, South Dakota State Library’s Digital Librarian, will be presenting the very basics of digitization including terminology, equipment and ContentDM.

  March 24 (Sioux Falls) and 26 (Rapid City)
  Michael Sauers and Christa Burns from the Nebraska Library Commission will be presenting Technology Planning workshops in Sioux Falls on March 24 and Rapid City on March 26.

• Library Training Institute 2010
  June 6-11, 2010 (Aberdeen)
  Coordinated by the South Dakota State Library, the Library Training Institute is a four-year program of continuing education for library practitioners, support staff and trustees of small public libraries. No prior formal library science education, or previous college attendance, is required to attend.
  Registration deadline is April 5.
