Support summer reading with eResources

Use SDSL electronic resources to support and enhance this year's World Travel and Culture summer reading program theme.

One World Many Stories Children's Summer Reading Theme 2011Supplement the children's theme, One World, Many Stories, with the following:

  • SIRS Discoverer, grades K-9
    • Type in a keyword search or click the Countries box in Browse for full-text online magazine articles about countries.
    • Perform safe internet searches for country information in Discoverer WebFind.
    • Learn more by using Database Features Country Facts and Maps of the World.
  • World Book Kids (School Edition), World Book Online for Kids (Public Library Edition), grades K-5
    • Full-text online encyclopedia articles about countries include images of flags and maps, audio of national anthems, pictures and quick facts and have a read-aloud feature.
    • Links from country articles take readers to related articles and websites.
    • The Maps and More special feature lets users explore in Interactive Maps, Atlas Maps and Outline Maps and Flags.
    • World Book Kids (School Edition) features Compare Places, providing charts and information about states, countries and continents.

You Are Here Teen Summer Reading Theme 2011Reinforce the summer reading teen theme, You are Here, with these resources:

  • SIRS Issues Researcher, grades 6-12
    • Type keyword searches for results of full-text online magazine and newspaper articles about countries.
    • Use Topic Browse or Visual Browse to lead to other global topics.
    • Get country facts and images from the World Almanac and Maps.
  • World Book School Editions: Student and Advanced and World Book Public Library Editions: Info Finder and Online Reference Center
    • Explore full-text online encyclopedia articles about countries that include images of flags and maps, audio of national anthems and pictures, and have a read-aloud feature.
    • Links from country articles take readers to related magazine articles, websites and special reports.
    • Student's Explore the World page connects users with maps and country information in a click.
    • Info Finder and Online Reference Center feature Interactive Earth, a variety of maps.
    • Info Finder contains World Newspapers and World Book Explores Virtual Tours, which include virtual field trips to international sites.

Novel Destinations Adult Summer Reading Theme 2011In addition to the options above, satisfy adults' curiosity for the summer reading theme, Novel Destinations, with the resources below:

  • NetLibrary offers full-text online books about travel and history.
  • Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL) lets users look up country information from several full-text reference sources simultaneously. GVRL contains literary criticism, so readers can find out more about authors and their work. Users can either read articles themselves or use the read-aloud feature.

Free, direct access is available from the State Library website within libraries and schools library.sd.gov in South Dakota. Free 24/7 access is available to citizens from home with a library barcode and password.
