Online resources for English Language Learners

Has your community seen an increase in English Language Learners (ELL)? Do you have an increased demand for foreign language materials but don't have the budget to purchase the materials? Take advantage of the State Library online resources to help meet your foreign language needs.

World Book Online contains both Spanish and French language encyclopedias. All English language and the Spanish language provide article read-aloud. In addition, article text can be translated into any number of additional languages.

World Book Discover Encyclopedia is a differentiated learning resource with a visual dictionary, reading comprehension questions, a browse-by-photo option and more to help ELL students be successful.

Learning Express Library provides a range of Spanish language e-books, practice exams and courses. The courses and exams cover reading skills, math skills, the U.S. Citizenship test and the GED. Courses offer lessons and overviews in Spanish along with questions and responses entirely in English to develop familiarity with the English language.

Online journal articles in Proquest and SIRS Issues Researcher can be translated into numerous foreign languages. For patrons looking for medical, business, and other information, Gale Virtual Reference Library contains updated reference materials that can be translated. Gale Virtual Reference also provides article read-aloud.

Free direct access to all resources is available from the State Library website within South Dakota libraries and schools. 24/7 access is available to citizens from home with a barcode and password.
